County Commission Operations

  • Stanton County Board of Commissioners meets regularly on the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month at 8:30 am. 
  • The commission chair elected annually, presides over meetings, signs county orders, and represents the commission officially.
  • The chair ensures efficient meetings, procedural discipline, constructive discussions, and public engagement.
  • Commissioners must follow Kansas Open Meetings Act regulations for transparency.

Governance and Administration

  • Establish policies for county administration and departments.
  • Oversee personnel system, including hiring, salaries, and labor agreements.
  • Manage liability issues and procurement processes.
  • Supervise county elections and act as a board of canvassers to certify results.
  • Oversee county infrastructure, including buildings, roads, and public health services.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Review, adjust, and adopt the annual county budget.
  • Levy and collect property taxes to fund essential county services (law enforcement, health services, emergency management, roads, etc.).
  • Authorize applications for federal and state funding.
  • Monitor county finances and adopt policies on investments, borrowing, and risk management.
  • Approve payment of county expenses.

Public Services and Community Development

  • Provide state-mandated services (law enforcement, public health, solid waste management, emergency response, etc.).
  • Offer optional local services (hospitals, parks, zoning, economic development, libraries, cultural programs, etc.).
  • Represent the county in joint agreements with other government entities.
  • Participate in regional and national organizations (Kansas Association of Counties, National Association of Counties).
  • Communicate county actions and concerns to the public.
